Clever Girl

IMG_5351Sutton: “Follow my lead… and succeed!”

Me: “That’s clever. Where’d you hear that?”

Sutton: “I made it up.”

Me: “No you didn’t.”

Sutton: “I did!”

Me: “I don’t believe you.”

Sutton: “Why not?”

Me: “It’s too sophisticated for a five-year-old to think up.”

Sutton: “I did! I thought I up!”

Me: “OK.”

Sutton: “You believe me?”

Me: “Sure.”

Sutton: “Dad?”

Me: “Yeah?”

Sutton: “What does ‘succeed’ mean?”

  1. When I was little, about 4 or 5, my mom got me a pet tadpole (the idea was to watch it grow and morph into a frog, hoping it doesn’t die before then). When she asked me what I wanted to name it, I thought for a minute and then said, “Polywoggle.” Mom was confused, and tried to talk me out of naming it something so silly and random. but I insisted. Neither she nor I had any idea that Polywog is a word for a baby frog. A few days later, she came to me and said, Hey Margie, my friend told me what polywog means. did you know it means a baby frog? And I had to tell her over and over, I had NO clue, and the name just came to mind randomly. Now, I may have heard the word on tv or the radio, but I didn’t actually remember hearing it, so to my mind, I had made it up. I have no idea how it happened. This is why you have to be careful what you say around kids, or expose them to. They subconsciously absorb everything!
